Nestled in the Val du Dadou, between the villages of Mont
Dragon and St Julien du Puy, La Metairie Neuve is a rural haven. St Julien
du Puy is a tiny hamlet with a quaint little church and is set on a high
mound or ‘puy’, the core of an ancient volcano. From this vantage point,
some 15 or 20 minutes walk from the house, you will find excellent views of
the rest of the valley and the surrounding countryside. Mont Dragon,
although larger than St Julien du Puy, is still a relatively small village.
It has some attractive old buildings and an ancient square at its centre
that is so charming it merits its own tourist signs at local road junctions.
Neither of these villages has any shops, although Mont Dragon does have a
post office and also a reasonable restaurant which is only a few minutes
drive from the house or a 15 minute stroll.
Approximately 6 or 7 minutes drive from the house is a substantially larger
village, Laboutarie, which has two more restaurants we would thoroughly
recommend. There is a good pharmacy and an excellent bakery, where along
with your croissants you can also purchase La Depeche, the local newspaper,
and food essentials. For those of you who are self-catering, you will find
all your food shopping needs met by a selection of large supermarkets, plus
old-fashioned butchers and other specialist food shops, in either Realmont
or Grauhlet, two small towns both about 15 minutes drive away.
If you can drag yourself away from the swimming pool and the relaxed
atmosphere of La Metairie Neuve, less than two minutes from our gate you
will find a public footpath which takes you across the fields of the
adjoining farm and into a little wood. Wildlife abounds in the form of
hares, pheasants, and birds of prey. Alternatively, if you fancy a little
more strenuous exercise you can make use of the bicycles we provide. The
gently undulating countryside makes the local area ideal for cycling. There
are a large number of routes available, including a disused railway line
about 2 miles or 15 minutes ride away, which has been converted to a
footpath and cycleway. It links Albi and Castres, taking in some spectacular
scenery and beautiful villages along its route.
